ALL THINGS SHAKESPEARE

BELOW IS A 'FEED' OF CHALLANGES TO FEAST UPON.

FOR THIS IS OUR COMMUNITY  - AND WE HAVE....

... no choice but to engage with contemporary forms in an attempt to turn them into fresh material for revelation and embodied insight. We must throw the junk of the consumer society into the furnace of the imagination in order to transmute, in order to create forms which correspond more closely to the authentic impulses ...OF OUR INNER WORKINGS.

  -- PETER ABBS, 1989.

WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY to share our ideas.

SONNET SNAPSHOT

Sonnet Snapshot

 LOVE.

PASSAGES OF TIME.

BEAUTY.

MORTALITY.

Amongst his rollicking-bollicking stories, was Shakespeare’s devotion to

                     One hundred
                         and fifty
                             four
                                Sonnets.

Sonnets that majestically combine words to create story, illicit insight, intrigue and fire in your heart.

Layers of meaning have been uncovered over the centuries.

However!

This is YOUR opportunity to represent your response with a medium other than language.

Why? Because sometimes language falls short of capturing our response to story that changes the direction of the heart or infuriates the mind, or empowers the imagination to dream one’s self in a dream-scape – a world where adventure reigns.

Shakespeare’s sonnets are imbued with this.

Transforming
Transcending
& Transporting us…
So how do we capture this?

This is YOUR challenge.

Firstly, choose a Sonnet that makes your toes tingle.

And using one of the following mediums – attempt to capture what best represents this Sonnet for you.

  • Photograph [you must take it]
  • Movement piece
  • Visual Art
  • Music
  • A variation of all of the above

Your only rule….. No words.

The DESIGNERS
  • SET - Consider the orginal world of the play. Think about what world you would like the show to give life to? Consider key themes, symbols & interactions that are met in the play. Think about the parallels of the play - what other 'context' could the story exist within - a steam-punk world, a cabaret, a circus etc.
  • COSTUME -  this comprises of costumes, and props - consider the inner intentsions, motiffs & actions of the central characters of the play. How could their 'personalities' manifest into a costume design?
